What kind of fish is suitable for fishing in winter?
All serious anglers know that winter is not the time to put away their rods. In fact, it is the perfect time to target exotic species that are easy to spot during winter time. Here are some of the top species to target this winter.
- Striped Bass
Fishing striped bass is a challenge as these species put up exciting fights and are also harsh to pull. You can use eels, flies, and jigs to catch them during winter.
- Bonefish
Bonefish are most commonly found in shallow flats during winter. They promise a great sport and can be used to test your fly-fishing skills. These can also be caught using crab and shrimp. However, you need to have an accurate cast to win the game.
- Trout
Trouts are commonly found in creeks and chilly springs in the summer season. During the winters, their metabolism allows them to maintain a high level of activity and also swim easily under the coldest of conditions.
- Channel catfish
If you are looking for a fun and challenging catch during winter, then you need to target channel catfish. These are one of the most active species during the winter are tend to be quite aggressive. If indulging in a crazy fight is your thing, then looking for channel catfish would be worth it.
Winter Fishing Tips
Winter is not just the time to prepare your equipment and work on your strategies. You can still catch some rare fish if you follow some simple and effective advice.

Tip 1: Find some warm water
If you are keen on fishing in cold weather, then you need to find the warmest spots such as river branches, ponds, and lakes. If you are fishing in a lake or a pond, then find shallow areas such as the edges where the fishes tend to gather. Near the port areas, you can come across a high density of white fish. You will also come across predatory fishes such as pike or perch.
Tip 2: Fish during the best times
You don’t have to
get up at dawn to set your line during winter. Lack of sun and low temperatures don’t encourage fish to start biting early in the day. The best time to fish in winter is between 11 am to 4 pm. This is because the temperature is at its warmest during the period.
Tip 3: Wear protective clothing and carry appropriate gear with you
If you are well-protected, then nothing can stop you from enjoying fishing even in biting cold. Cover your hands, feet, and head as these parts are sensitive to cold. Wear gloves, socks, and a hat or scarf. Pay special attention to covering your hands as they are bound to come in contact with cold water during fishing. Wear a warm jacket and trousers if you are planning to stay in a particular spot for a long time. Carry all the necessary winter fishing gear that would make your task a lot easier.
Final Thoughts
Fishing in winter can be fun if you use appropriate gear for the weather and know what species you need to target. This guide introduces you to some useful cold-weather fishing gear along with information on the species you need to target. Follow our winter fishing tips to stay at the top of the game while fishing in winter.

Part 2: How to Choose the Right Power Knobs
The most straightforward way to choose your power knob is to check the fitment table. Then, you can find the right knobs according to your reel model. Click here to check.
If you cannot find your reel model number in the product fitment table, or if you are not familiar with the reel information, continue reading the guide.
Before we start, there are 2 methods of power knob installation:
- direct fitment (no extra tools needed)
- drilling fitment(need to drill a hole when replacing your original knob).
So when you choose the knob, it is also important to judge if you need to drill or not. Now let’s get started:
Step 1:
Take out your reel, look at your original knob, and check how it’s fixed. If it’s fixed by a screw, then our knob can directly fit your reel. And if it’s fixed by a rivet, drill fitment will be needed.(shown below in the picture)

Step 2:
Measure your shaft size as shown below:A series knobs directly fit shaft size:

B series knobs directly fit shaft size:

C series knobs directly fit shaft size:

D series knobs directly fit shaft size:

For Direct Fitment:
- A series knobs fit reel shaft size with 4mm in diameter, 27mm or 27.5mm in length.
- B series knob fit reel shaft size with 5mm in diameter, 37.5mm or 46mm in length.
- C series knob fits reel shaft size with 4/5mm in diameter, 26mm in length. If you have a Abu Garcia reel, then it will fit well.
- D series knob fits reel shaft size with 5mm in diameter, 36.5mm in length.

Part 3: How to Replace the Handle Knob
We will explain the handle replacement method using the Shimano Type A. Follow the steps below.(installation guide video)
A38 direct fit: https://gomexus.com/pages/installation-video
- Attach the adjustment washer and bearing to the shaft in order. (Depending on the actual situation, use an adjustment washer to adjust so that there is no rattling.)
- Insert the knob body into the shaft.
- Install another bearing and tighten the genuine screw with a screwdriver.
- Finally, cover with a cap and tighten.
Helpful Tip: A bushing is needed when you replace your Daiwa knob.

Part 4: Rattling Adjustment Points
Often, there is a gap when replacing the handle knob. It can cause the knobs to rattle. If your reel knob is rattling, we advise that you check the Gomexus knobs accessories. We prepared 5 washers of different thickness for you to fill the gap and eliminate any rattling.
Change the number of washers, tighten the screws with a screwdriver, and then move the knob up and down to see how loose it is. In some cases, you can insert multiple washers. However, if too many washers are inserted, the knob rotations will be slower. Therefore, make the washers thinner or reduce the number of washers.Summary
Now that you’ve read the standard guide that we prepared for you, you can easily choose the right power knobs for your reels.
